The Selangor State Government through Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) has set up a Centre for Environmental Protection and Information (CEPI), to develop and provide training programmes for public and private sector employees focusing on improving environmental management, protection, preservation and rehabilitation.
CEPI, a joint-venture company between KDEB and SEG International Bhd, is also looking into the possibility of establishing a certification framework for the training programmes, in order to encourage more professionals and employees to be trained in areas of environmental protection. A system will be developed by CEPI to compile, analyse and disseminate information regarding the state of the environment and also data on development projects. This system will be useful to developers and consultants in order to obtain the latest information on environmental issues.
On 23rd August 2006, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between CEPI and the Institute of Environmental Science & Research Limited (ESR) from New Zealand. The MoU was signed by YBhg Dato' Hj Abd Karim Munisar, Director of CEPI and Dr Jacob de Feijter, representing ESR. The event was witnessed by YAB Dato' Seri Dr Hj Mohamad Khir Toyo, Dato' Menteri Besar Selangor and Minister of Trade of New Zealand, the Hon Phil Goff.
The scope of agreement covers consultancy and expert advisory services to stakeholders and industry partners, particularly in the areas of water management, environmental indicators and surveillance.
